2008-05-13 ALERT-Natural Balance Roll Turkey

ADMIN NOTE: This just came through one of my lists a few minutes ago, from someone who is actually on the list. The email is there, if you want to contact her.

subject: DOG FOOD WARNING

WARNING: Permission to cross post. I was slicing up a Natural Balance Dog Food Roll, Turkey Flavour and I noticed a clear white nylon thread embedded within the roll. I pulled it out and continued to slice the rest of the roll and found two more nylon
strings. I have contacted the company and I am awaiting a reply.

Fortunately, I always slice the roll into small pieces for treats, so I’m pretty sure I haven’t fed any of the string/thread to my dog. I will update
the list when I have a response from Natural Balance. I saved the thread and can email a picture to anyone who is concerned.
PLEASE be cautious with this product.

Castleberry’s Food Company stops production

STATEMENT FROM CASTLEBERRY’S FOOD COMPANY

Castleberry’s Food Company has received notification that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) suspended the Temporary Emergency Operating Permit that was issued in September 2007. The permit granted permission for the Augusta, Georgia factory to commence production of FDA products, following a July 2007 voluntary product recall.

Castleberry’s will work closely with the FDA to promptly answer questions and address any possible concerns. Although formal notification has not yet been received, we understand that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) may also require responses.

During this time, Castleberry’s has decided to cease production of all products in the Augusta, Georgia factory. Factory work shifts are temporarily on hold.

We are cooperating fully with the agencies and look forward to a prompt resolution that we can resume operation and work shifts.

It is important to note that the suspension of our temporary permit does not involve any product recall.

2008-07-10-Heads Up! Plastic Inside Lamb & Rice Roll

HEADS UP EVERYONE ! Dick Van Pattens Lamb and Rice Rolls

2008-07-10 I received a post from a member explaining that *soft clear plastic* was just found in 2 rolls of the 3 she had purchased. She did not open the third package yet. She has written to the company and she has taken photos. I have seen the photos. The company has responded right away, and has requested some things to be sent to them.

As soon as I get permission to post the details, I will post the information with its photos, here the forum and to my blog and in an updated email. I just wanted to give you the heads up.

Something similar happened in May with Turkey Roll, only it was not plastic! See previous post before this one. Must some issue with quality control!

UPDATE: 7/13/08 I have permission to post the details, so stay toned here. I have to typed them up and get them approved for accuracy and then I will be posting them here. In the mean time the use by dates and photos are below!

02/21/09 is the best by date.

Natural Balance Pet Foods, Inc. Recalls Products in Response to American Nutrition Inc. Pet Food Recall

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — Pacoima, CA — April 27, 2007 — Because of the pet food recall initiated today by American Nutrition Inc., Natural Balance Pet Foods has announced it is issuing a nationwide recall of a number of canned products manufactured by American Nutrition. This action is limited to four specific Natural Balance canned formulas: Chicken Canned Dog Formula 13 oz , Beef Canned Dog Formula 13 oz, Lamb Canned Dog Formula 13 oz, and the 3oz and 6 oz Ocean Fish Canned Cat Formulas.

Natural Balance Pet Foods is taking this voluntary action after learning the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed rice protein concentrate used by American Nutrition contained melamine, a substance not approved for use in food. These products are being recalled in addition to our previously recalled Venison and Brown Rice canned and bagged dog foods, Venison and Brown Rice dog treats, and Venison and Green Pea dry cat food.

Natural Balance Pet Foods has not received any indication of quality or safety issues, including pet illness, with the four withdrawn formulas. However, because American Nutrition informed the company that these four specific products may include rice protein concentrate, Natural Balance Pet Foods felt this action was necessary for the protection of its customers and their pets.

It should be noted that the products being recalled were not formulated or labeled to contain rice protein concentrate. While the FDA is investigating this, current information indicates this error is a result of a manufacturing deviation by American Nutrition. Natural Balance is working with the FDA in this matter.
